The report to the European Space Agency
and the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN)
Ecological situation in the Russian part of the Black Sea

Period: July 17, 2007 – October 25, 2007
Data source:remote sensed data acquired by ENVISAT and ERS-2 satellites

1. The results of the carried out analysis definitely show the presence of oil pollution in the Russian part of the Black Sea waters, which is of anthropogenic origin including spills/leakages from ships or oil-pipes, wastewater drainage etc. Based on satellite data the estimated total area of oil pollution is 66 square kilometers.
Most of the oil polluted areas are located along the shipping routes (see appendix 1). Given the precise times when satellite images are made it is possible to reliably track those responsible for water pollution and report about ecological violations.

2. Also the monitoring showed the pollution of the Russian Black Sea coastal area, which raises concerns because of increasing oil and oil products transportation via Black Sea ports. According to the results of satellite images analysis, with a high degree of certainty it is possible to detect water pollution with oil and oil products in the area of Sochi and Novorossiysk(see appendix 2).

3. Regular satellite monitoring of sea waters using data of the Earth radar sounding proved to be highly efficient in solving ecology related tasks. Using expert evaluation together with integration of obtained results into a single geo-information system (GIS), what contains information on oil and transport infrastructure, licensed zones etc, allows to make highly reliable assessment of the ecological situation in the Black Sea.

Conclusions:Taking into account the results and the effectiveness of the current project it is proposed to continue the regular monitoring of the Black Sea region. The results of the monitoring will be integrated into a geo-information system that will be publicly available via geo-portal www.BlackSea-online.com and will provide general public and investors with the objective and reliable information on the ecological situation in the Black Sea.
