Monitoring of the south-western part of the Black Sea
Experts of the “Ecological satellite monitoring of the Black Sea” carried out an analysis of satellite data from August 7, 2010 over south-western part of the Black Sea. The analysis identified oil spills length of about 50 kilometers. Likely sources of pollution are oil tankers. The total area of the polluted area is about 35 square kilometers. Pollution is oriented from north-western part of the Black Sea to the Bosporus. Representatives of the project have addressed to governments of the Black Sea region with a request to increase the degree of administrative responsibility for pollution of the Black Sea. In the near future press release from management of our project will be available at www.BlackSea-online.com web-site.

New stage of ecological monitoring
20 July, 2010 the Black Sea Organization for Integration and Sustainable Development has signed agreements with the European Space Agency to continue the “Ecological Satellite Monitoring of the Black Sea” project. Under these agreements provision of limited number of satellite and analytical data will be during the next year.
At the moment there is absolutely not enough objective and reliable information about the ecological situation in the Black Sea region, especially related to the water pollution with oil products, taking into account that transportation of oil cargoes is increasing. The latest data needs to be made available to all concerned people and organizations. The “Ecological Satellite Monitoring of the Black Sea” project (including specially dedicated geo-portal www.BlackSea-online.com) is the first open and objective source of up-to-date and reliable information about the ecological situation in the Black Sea waters.
For information: The “Ecological Satellite Monitoring of the Black Sea” project has been realizing since the end of 2007, the aim of the project is to inform the society in the region about the ecological situation in the Black Sea waters based on reliable, objective and the latest data. In the beginning of December (2009) the “Ecological satellite monitoring of the Black Sea” project got the “National ecological prize”. This is the only award in Russian Federation for the achievements in the ecological context and for the contribution to the sustainable development.
